Thursday, July 10

Mark had promised he would lay off the booze, but Mabel wasn’t hopeful. She greased the tops of her rolls, worried about what was to become of him and Toni. He was like a broken man, with nothing to lose, she thought.

Corliss poked his head into the bakery. “Amour is here.”

Mabel looked up. “Amour?” she said, surprised. “Well, tell her to come in.”

He winced. “She’s a little upset. Said she’d wait in the car.”

Mabel quickly slid her rolls into the oven, closed the door, and went outside. She opened the car door and immediately knew Amour had been crying. She climbed in and hugged her friend. “What’s wrong?”

Amour reached in her pocket for a tissue. “The wedding is off.”

Mabel stared in disbelief. “Why? What happened?”

“Lily happened…that’s what happened,” Amour wailed.

“Lily?”

Amour proceeded to tell her about Ed’s revelation.

Mabel was as shocked by the news that Lily was Victoria’s birthmother as she was by the news that Amour ended things with Ed. “I can’t believe it. I mean, I did see a resemblance, but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think they were related. Have you talked to Victoria about Lily and her grandparents?”

Amour shook her head. “Not yet.”

“But you’re going to?”

Amour blew her nose. “Of course. Tonight.” She started to laugh. “I hope she’s happy about it, because I know she’s going to be heartbroken when I tell her about Ed. She was so excited about the wedding.”

Mabel nodded and smiled. “Amour, do you think you might be being too hard on Ed?”

“Too hard! How can you say that? He’s known for two years and never said a word! How could I ever trust him again?” She blew her nose. “You know, I’ve never really understood his relationship with Lily.”

Mabel knew Amour was upset and didn’t want to make things worse. She squeezed her hand. “They’re good friends, that’s all.”

“Well that just goes to show how bad his judgement is. I know you like her, but you gotta admit she just jumps from one mess to the next. She’s trouble. Thank God Victoria’s nothing like her.”

Mabel dropped her head, thinking Amour wasn’t being fair to Lily. “I don’t know what to say…or do, for that matter.”

Amour wiped her wet cheek. “Can you come over this evening…be there when I tell Victoria? I mean, I’ll tell her myself, but I’d love if you can be there for moral support.” She smiled. “If not for Victoria, for me.”

Mabel rubbed Amour’s leg and smiled. “Of course.”

“And Lily sent you pictures of the kids, right? Maybe you could bring them along, so Victoria can see─” Amour started to sob. “The…the family I took her away from.”

Mabel put her arms around her. “Amour, you didn’t take Victoria away from anyone. You rescued her from the orphanage and God knows what else. Victoria loves you. And she’s going to love you even more, if that’s possible, for introducing her to her brother and sisters.”

Amour sat up and tilted her head back. “And her mother…and grandparents.
