Mark had promised he would lay off the booze, but Mabel wasnât hopeful. She greased the tops of her rolls, worried about what was to become of him and Toni. He was like a broken man, with nothing to lose, she thought.
Corliss poked his head into the bakery. âAmour is here.â
Mabel looked up. âAmour?â she said, surprised. âWell, tell her to come in.â
He winced. âSheâs a little upset. Said sheâd wait in the car.â
Mabel quickly slid her rolls into the oven, closed the door, and went outside. She opened the car door and immediately knew Amour had been crying. She climbed in and hugged her friend. âWhatâs wrong?â
Amour reached in her pocket for a tissue. âThe wedding is off.â
Mabel stared in disbelief. âWhy? What happened?â
âLily happenedâ¦thatâs what happened,â Amour wailed.
âLily?â
Amour proceeded to tell her about Edâs revelation.
Mabel was as shocked by the news that Lily was Victoriaâs birthmother as she was by the news that Amour ended things with Ed. âI canât believe it. I mean, I did see a resemblance, but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think they were related. Have you talked to Victoria about Lily and her grandparents?â
Amour shook her head. âNot yet.â
âBut youâre going to?â
Amour blew her nose. âOf course. Tonight.â She started to laugh. âI hope sheâs happy about it, because I know sheâs going to be heartbroken when I tell her about Ed. She was so excited about the wedding.â
Mabel nodded and smiled. âAmour, do you think you might be being too hard on Ed?â
âToo hard! How can you say that? Heâs known for two years and never said a word! How could I ever trust him again?â She blew her nose. âYou know, Iâve never really understood his relationship with Lily.â
Mabel knew Amour was upset and didnât want to make things worse. She squeezed her hand. âTheyâre good friends, thatâs all.â
âWell that just goes to show how bad his judgement is. I know you like her, but you gotta admit she just jumps from one mess to the next. Sheâs trouble. Thank God Victoriaâs nothing like her.â
Mabel dropped her head, thinking Amour wasnât being fair to Lily. âI donât know what to sayâ¦or do, for that matter.â
Amour wiped her wet cheek. âCan you come over this eveningâ¦be there when I tell Victoria? I mean, Iâll tell her myself, but Iâd love if you can be there for moral support.â She smiled. âIf not for Victoria, for me.â
Mabel rubbed Amourâs leg and smiled. âOf course.â
âAnd Lily sent you pictures of the kids, right? Maybe you could bring them along, so Victoria can seeââ Amour started to sob. âTheâ¦the family I took her away from.â
Mabel put her arms around her. âAmour, you didnât take Victoria away from anyone. You rescued her from the orphanage and God knows what else. Victoria loves you. And sheâs going to love you even more, if thatâs possible, for introducing her to her brother and sisters.â
Amour sat up and tilted her head back. âAnd her motherâ¦and grandparents.
